On the 31st March 2007 Sydney city, businesses were to turn out their lights for one hour from 730 PM to 8:30 PM. This was in support of the environment. This monumental event took place and was a major success. Around 2,000 businesses and 65,000 Households in Sydney took part with other businesses and households throughout Australia deciding to follow suit and made the impact even greater.

In 2006 The Australian government announced it has decided to phase out electric light bulb use by 2009 or 2010.

These will be replaced by energy saving lamps, that last up to eight times longer than regular light bulbs, use 20 percent of the electricity to produce an equivalent amount of light, thus producing less green house gas emissions than regular light bulbs.
